congratulations on your IMAZ finish !!!.... I was there with about 8 members of our tri club as support staff. I volunteered as a catcher at the finish line and had as much fun as I did doing AZ..It was my first and 2nd IM..Good job on your work for the Jon Blais foundation, I was very inspired when I saw his finish and still am for his dedication to the sport during his too short life.......Good Luck in Kansas this year Trish
It was great meeting you finally - we've posted up the photos & posted an Album we took from your fundraiser this last weekend. Thanks for the Gift Certificate - I'm hoping I can use it very soon! Additionally, thanks to your wife for all the cookies the kids really enjoyed. We had a great time!
It looks like the last half of the run got pretty rough. How is your fracture? After working through all that, now you know you can do anything.
I went into my 1st Ironman with an injury (tendonitis in my knee). My race pace kept getting slower and slower as the race went on. My knee started hurting about 50 miles into the bike and just kept getting worse. You beat my time by almost a half an hour. The way I look at it is I am an Ironman, I know better what to expect next time and I will be able to beat my time by a couple of hours next time.
CONGATULATIONS!!!!!!!
On Friday morning I swam one lap of the course. In the race, we had to swim one lap then get out and run a little on the beach back to the start and then swim another lap. This allowed me to get over the shock of the water temperature, get used to the current, made me realize that my feet hurt when running across the beach and I got to practice sighting the buoys. On Saturday morning I swam an easy half a lap.
Also on Friday, I rode my bike on the run course. It was only about a 10 or 12 mile ride and I got familiar with where the hills were. After the bike ride on the run course, I went for an easy 15 minute run. Later that day I drove, in my car, the bike course to get familiar with that and find good places for my wife and kids to cheer me on. I saw them 3 or 4 times on the bike portion of the race.
Saturday you need to take it easy and stay off you feet as much as possible. You will probably need to drop off your bike as well. I froze a couple of my Perpetuem bottles (leave a couple of inches at the top for ice expansion). I brought them the morning of the race and put one on my bike and one in my special needs bag that I picked up halfway through the bike. I also froze a few small Snickers bars and put those in my run and bike special needs bags.
Enjoy the whole experience, it will be amazing. The first thing my 11 year old daughter said after I finished was that she can't wait to do an Ironman. She was so amazed at the whole spectacle and presentation of the race. The Ironman is like no other race in the execution and exhibition. Some people are superstisous and won't buy Ironman stuff before they finish, but after the race they will be sold out of some stuff. Also, they may have different stuff after the race.
Good luck, have fun, go fast and let us know how it went!
