You all remember watching John Blais – “Blazeman” - from Ironman Hawaii on NBC. In 2005, he became the first person with ALS to finish an Ironman. As Blazeman rolled across the finish line in Kona, he challenged all endurance athletes to help find a cure for ALS. I knew in my heart I wanted to volunteer for the 2009 Cycle for ALS Indoor Ride-a-thon. REI has teamed up with The Blazeman Foundation for ALS at various stores nationwide and will host the March 7, 2009 event at the REI Flagship store in beautiful downtown Denver. For just $25 start the New Year knowing you’re making a difference with an awesome indoor cycling workout to support ALS research. I’m a huge believer in “passing it on” and I hope you join me and Lisa Decker in this event!
I would like to thank Denver REI, GTRI for their support of the event.
Cycle for ALS Indoor Ride-a-thon is from 11am-3pm on March 7th and you can ride as little or as long as you would like. If you want to kick start your 2009 cycling training – I promise you a long ride you’ll never forget! (Please bring your trainer/bike). This will be a high energy, feel good event that you won’t want to miss!!
I expect the event to sell out so if you’re interested – reserve your spot now on - http://www.active.com/page/Event_Details.htm?event_id=1671596&assetId=efc2abbd-be2a-46dc-95cf-16d3ab130328

DJ,
I felt strong pretty much throughout the race but didn't want to expend too much energy and lose it in the run. The whole day was absolutely amazing and I loved all of it! I honestly lost my legs around mile 20 and tripped three times within about a mile or so.... I simply couldn't lift my legs! I tried to run but knew I had beaten the 17 mile cutoff and there was no way I was not going to finish. I really wanted to break 15 hours but felt amazing knowing all my work would pay off and I would finish. My stress fracture hurt for about the first 10 miles then I felt awesome until I hit mile 20ish. My back of my left knee hurt tremendously and I was running out of gas.
Rounding the final turn an older man probably in his 70's said "Finish Strong Like The IronMan You Are Son, Make Us All Proud This Is Your Day!" The words hit home real hard and I turned the corner and heard my name and city and entered a zone I have never been and probably will never be in again. Truly a blessing and to do the roll at the end I have dreamt of so many times was surreal.
Next site on my mind is the ALS Spin-A-Thon In February, would love to see you or anyone else on this site there.
No destination choosen yet. Jon Wayne is my brother and we are trying to come up with one we can do together. I think you have been advising him or atleast some of the guys on this site.
I didnt think about the late spring keeping me off the bike. You are right I should wait and do some smaller olympic distance ones until the late summer or fall. My sister has the benefit of training all winter with the mild temps back in Tennessee and we will be stuck indoors. She is aiming to kill me so I need every advantage I can get.
Thanks DJ. I have jumped in with both feet and I am starting to get a decent base. I have a long way to go but its nice to have a goal and something to work on all winter. Ross has given me some good ideas for a 70.3 but I have not committed to anything yet. My sister wants to meet me and do it with me once we get one picked out. Do you have any recommendations? I am a total rookie and any advice is always welcome.
